Who doesn’t love a grab bag? Oh how excited I was as a kid, when I had a few bucks allowance burning a hole in my pocket. I could buy a bag of colorful treats at the candy shop (yes, I am old enough to remember actual candy stores), or I could get a grab bag at the department store. These small bags held mysteries I wanted. Usually it was just some costume jewelry, but I loved the surprise, and remember that sweet feeling of anticipation. Fast forward about 20 or 30 years (ahem) and now the same idea makes me cringe, because most gift bags at children’s parties are chock full of plastic trinkets, chemically laden kid’s tattoos, and candy with food dye and high fructose corn syrup (am I a party pooper or what?). When I think of those same grab bags at stores, I imagine them full of lead or PVC containing jewelry. Now thankfully, things can be different. If you love surprises, or simply, love getting packages, or you love not shopping (as I do), I have a delightful plan for you.

Welcome to Connecting Hands, with high-quality merchandise, affordable prices and profits that are poured into a good cause. Pam Will describes the fundraisers, held three or four times a year, as “huge garage sales.” They take place in a warehouse at Connecto Electric, the business Pam and her husband, Jeff, own at 3716 McClelland Ave., just off the Bayfront Connector. Pam and a core of 20 volunteers have transformed a 45-by-60-foot area of the bright, airy warehouse into an inviting boutique. “We use everything we can. Nothing goes to waste,” says Lil Laskowski, who is in charge of refurbishing the costume jewelry, displayed on wood shutters that Pam found discarded on a roadside. The volunteers originally met at House of Healing, which served women recovering from addictions.

Visit Photo-Eye To Purchase ��Same Difference�� Rinko Kawauchi’s ��Illuminance�� is a hardcover monograph, by Aperture, that manages to glow in a manner suggested by the title. The spine is separated from the book, which is a little quirky, but the inside of the cover is more easily seen this way, and it introduces the trippy, day-glow, space-age palette that one finds within the plates. Nice touch. Not unlike Mr. Panar’s aforementioned book, ��Illuminance�� is a collection of seemingly disconnected images. But it differs distinctly, as these images are anything but random and dry. Page after page, the photographs scream ��art,�� with light, and color, dynamic compositions, and the impact of surprise. The kaleidoscopic pinks and purples, black cats and costume jewelry, desert wanderers and dead bugs, and of course the requisite light cascading through cherry blossoms. Ultimately, she builds a cohesive vision through the narrative.
